Sir Adolphus William Ward (1837-1924), historian, was born at Hampstead, Middlesex, on 2 December 1837. He was educated in Germany and Bury St Edmunds before entering Peterhouse, Cambridge, in 1855 (B.A., 1859; M.A., 1862), where he became a Fellow in 1862. He entered the Inner Temple in 1860, and was called to the bar in 1866, but never practised law.
